Say Your Name: Pronounce It

Privacy Policy

Last updated 23 September 2026

Say Your Name collects nothing. There is no account, no sign-up, and no server. Everything you save — names, recordings, photos and notes — stays on your iPhone. None of it is transmitted anywhere, and the developer has no way to see it.

What the app stores, and where

When you save someone, the app writes their name, pronunciation recording, photo or emoji, and any notes into its own private storage area on your device. That storage is sandboxed by iOS: no other app can read it.

The app never uploads this data. There is no sync service, no remote database and no server associated with this app.

Permissions the app asks for

Microphone

Used only while you are actively recording a pronunciation. The audio is written to a file on your device, and no audio is sent off the device.

Speech recognition

Optional, and off until you turn it on. When it is on, the app reads back the clip you just recorded so it can fill in the spelling of the name for you, instead of making you type it.

The app sets Apple's requiresOnDeviceRecognition flag, which requires the recognition to run entirely on your iPhone. On a device that cannot recognise speech locally, the app produces no suggestion at all rather than falling back to a server.

When you grant this permission, iOS shows its own standard alert saying that speech data will be sent to Apple. That sentence is the same in every app and is written before an app declares how it will recognise speech. It does not describe this app: no audio and no transcript leaves your iPhone, and nothing is stored anywhere except the name you keep.

Camera

Used only when you choose to take a photo, or when you open the QR scanner to import a profile someone is showing you. Photos are saved to the app's local storage. Scanning happens entirely on-device.

Photo library

Used only if you tap "Choose from library" while editing someone. The app receives the single image you pick. It does not read, index or browse your library.

Every one of these permissions is optional. Decline any of them and the rest of the app continues to work.

Analytics and tracking

There are none. The app contains no analytics SDK, no crash reporter, no advertising identifier, no tracking pixels and no third-party code of any kind. Nothing about your usage is measured or reported.

Purchases

The optional one-time unlock is processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. Payment is handled by Apple, under Apple's own privacy policy.

The app asks iOS a single question — whether this Apple ID owns the unlock — and receives yes or no. The developer never receives your name, email address, payment details or any identifier, and has no way to determine who has purchased.

Sharing

When you tap Share, the app builds a card image and a copy of the audio file and hands them to the standard iOS share sheet. You choose what happens next, and nothing is sent unless you pick a destination. Anything you share then falls under the privacy policy of whichever app or service you sent it to.

Backups you make

Settings has Back up to Files. It does nothing until you tap it. When you do, the app writes a folder with everyone you have saved (names, notes, recordings and photos) to the location you choose in the iOS Files picker. The app only writes where you point it and does not send the folder anywhere.

If you choose iCloud Drive or another cloud provider in that picker, the folder is then stored by that provider under its own privacy policy, the same as any other file you save there. Restore from a backup reads only the folder you pick.

Deleting your data

Deleting a person removes their recording and photo from disk along with their record. Deleting the app removes everything it stored, immediately and permanently. Backup folders you saved to Files are yours, and stay until you delete them there.

Because nothing is collected, there is nothing held elsewhere for you to request, correct or have erased.

Children

The app is suitable for all ages and collects no personal information from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date above. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
